QuestionCan I use commemorative coins issued in Japan for payment?

Answer

Yes, commemorative coins issued in Japan are legal tender, and can be exchanged for goods and services at face value. Please note, however, that the material and size of some commemorative coins differ from those of currently minted coins, and thus may not be used at vending machines, automated teller machines (ATMs), or some other machines. If you wish to use commemorative coins as circulating coins, we advise you to exchange them for circulating coins at the Bank of Japan or financial institutions.
