June 3, 2002
Bank of Japan
Financial Markets Department

The Bank of Japan has decided to change the categories of domestic banks in "Average Contracted Interest Rates on Loans and Discounts" from the data for April 2002, released today.

The total data coverage of the statistics do not change in the new categories released today, as all data are included in "Domestically licensed banks." However, the data for "Long-term credit banks" and "Trust banks" are no longer released, and are not included in any other subcategories, e.g., "City banks."

The changes are due to the decrease in the number of reporting banks as a result of major bank mergers which have taken place recently.

Details of the changes are as follows.

New categories after June 3, 2002:
"Domestically licensed banks," "City banks," "Regional banks," and "Regional banks II."
(Reference) Old categories before June 3, 2002:
"Domestically licensed banks," "City banks," "Regional banks," "Regional banks II," "Average of city banks, regional banks, and regional banks II," "Long-term credit banks," and "Trust banks."
