Changes in the "Principal Figures of Financial Institutions (Preliminary figures)"

The Financial Systems and Bank Examination Department of the Bank of Japan releases the changes for the surveyed financial institutions and their classification of "Principal Figures of Financial Institutions (Preliminary figures)" as mentioned below, from the data for January 2008 released in February 2008. These changes reflect such financial movement as (a) the Japan Post Bank, which started the business operations and (b) Citibank Japan, which became a new locally incorporated bank in Japan, etc.

1. Loans and Discounts

(A) Foreign banks

While branches of Citibank, N.A. became a new locally incorporated bank, i.e. Citibank Japan in July 2007, the figures for loans and discounts of Citibank Japan continue to be classified under "Foreign banks". These figures of Citibank Japan will be shifted from "Foreign banks" to "Other surveyed domestically licensed banks" as mentioned below from the data for January 2008 released in February 2008.  

(B) Other surveyed domestically licensed banks

From the data for January 2008 released in February 2008, the Bank will newly release the total of the monthly average amounts outstanding of loans and discounts for the Japan Post Bank, Citibank Japan, Sony bank, ORIX Trust and Banking Corporation, JSF Trust and Banking Co, and ShinGinko Tokyo as "Other surveyed domestically licensed banks".

2. Deposits and CDs

From the data for January 2008 released in February 2008, the Bank will newly release the total of the monthly average amounts outstanding of deposits and CDs for the Japan Post Bank, Citibank Japan, the Japan Net Bank, Sony Bank, ORIX Trust and Banking Corporation, ShinGinko Tokyo, Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking, Mizuho Trust and Banking, the Chuo Mitsui Trust and Banking Company, Sumitomo Trust & Banking Co, Shinsei Bank, and Aozora Bank as "Other surveyed domestically licensed banks". Keep it in mind that "Other surveyed domestically licensed banks" have different coverage in banks between "loans and discounts" and "deposits and CDs".

3. Long-Term Time-Series Data

From the data for January 2008 released in February 2008, the Bank will also release the monthly average amounts of outstanding of "Other surveyed domestically licensed banks" in "Long-Term Time-Series Data" in the Bank's web-site. Please keep it in mind that their release date is one business day behind from the release date of the monthly release.
