The Bank's original location was intended to be an interim base, and operations moved to the current site (Nihonbashi-Hongokucho) in 1896. The painting above shows the ceremony marking the completion of the current Main Building.
The current location used to be the site of the gold mint ("Kin-za":
"kin" means gold) where gold coins (called "koban") were manufactured in the Edo period (1603-1867). Similarly, the Ginza commercial district takes its name from "Gin-za" ("gin" means silver) because silver coins were made there in the past.
