The Bank's original location was intended as an interim base, and operations moved to the current site (Nihonbashi-hongoku cho) in 1896. The photo above shows the opening ceremony of
the current Old Building.
The new location had been the site of the gold mint ("Kin-za":
"kin" means gold) where gold coins (called "koban")
were manufactured in the Edo era (1603-1867). Incidentally,
"Gin-za" ("gin" means silver), currently
one of the most prosperous districts of Tokyo, is so named
because silver coins were made there in the past.
