During the banknote examination, worn-out banknotes unsuitable for reuse are sorted out and shredded, as shown above. Shredded banknotes are recycled as toilet paper and other items, or burned as waste.
The average life span of a 1,000 yen banknote is one to two years, shorter than other types of banknotes, as they are used more frequently. In contrast, the average life span of a 10,000 yen note is four to five years.
