Results of BIS International Locational Banking Statistics and International Consolidated Banking Statistics in Japan at End-March 2024

The Bank of Japan has released "Results of BIS International Locational Banking Statistics and International Consolidated Banking Statistics in Japan (End-March 2024)."
The summary of the results is as follows.
1. BIS International Locational Banking Statistics in Japan
(1) Banks located in Japan
At the end of March 2024, net external claims reported by banks located in Japan were $3,135.5 billion (an increase of $86.7 billion from the previous quarter end). Gross external claims were $4,723.0 billion (an increase of $133.1 billion). Gross external liabilities were $1,587.5 billion (an increase of $46.4 billion).
By region, gross external claims vis-à-vis "developed Europe," "United States and other developed countries," "offshore centers," and "developing countries" were $1,185.4 billion, $2,182.8 billion, $1,029.1 billion, and $306.2 billion, respectively.
Gross external liabilities vis-à-vis "developed Europe," "United States and other developed countries," "offshore centers," and "developing countries" were $672.4 billion, $544.0 billion, $209.8 billion, and $123.3 billion, respectively.
(2) Domestic banks excluding trust banks
Net external claims reported by domestic banks excluding trust banks were $864.3 billion (a decrease of $5.5 billion from the previous quarter end). Gross external claims were $1,877.8 billion (a decrease of $43.6 billion). Gross external liabilities were $1,013.5 billion (a decrease of $38.1 billion).
2. BIS International Consolidated Banking Statistics in Japan
(1) Domestic banks
International consolidated claims reported by domestic banks on an ultimate risk basis were $5,136.2 billion (an increase of $92.8 billion from the previous quarter end). Claims vis-à-vis "developed Europe," "United States and other developed countries," "offshore centers," and "developing countries" were $1,091.5 billion, $2,651.6 billion, $815.9 billion, and $558.7 billion, respectively.
(2) Domestic banks excluding trust banks
International consolidated claims reported by domestic banks excluding trust banks on an ultimate risk basis were $2,426.1 billion (a decrease of $50.8 billion from the previous quarter end).
