Notice for the Tankan

1. Release Schedule

The release schedule of the September 2010 survey of the Tankan will be as follows (announced on March 31 in"Statistical Releases and Publications Scheduled for the Next Six Months").

Outline and Summary : September 29, 8:50 a.m.
Figures by Industry ,The Comprehensive Data Set and BOJ Time-Series Data Search :
September 30, 8:50 a.m.
Reference Data on "Conditions for CP Issuance" : October 1, 8:50 a.m.

The release schedule for the next one year will be as follows (announced on June 30 in "Schedule for Releases of Statistical Data and Publications").

December 2010 survey (Outline and Summary ): December 15, 2010
March 2011 survey (Outline and Summary ): April 1, 2011

2. Treatment of Fixed Investment and Software Investment

Since the introduction of the new accounting standard for lease transactions (hereafter the new standard) beginning April 1, 2008, the Tankan has provided both figures of the "previous" and"new" standards for "Fixed Investment," "Software Investment," and "Software and Fixed Investment Excluding Land Purchasing Expenses," since the March 2009 survey. The figures compiled under the previous standard were released as official numbers in the Tankan , and those of the new standard were released just as a reference for users. (See "Treatment of Fixed Investment and Software Investment in the Tankan After the Application of the New Accounting Standard for Lease Transactions" issued on February 12, 2009.)

Starting the September 2010 survey, the figures compiled under the new standard will be released as official data. The figures compiled under the previous standard will no longer be provided. Note that there will be a statistical discontinuity between the June 2010 and the September 2010 surveys.

The new release format of the Tankan for the September 2010 and thereafter surveys will be the following:

  1. Data of fixed investment and software investment will be changed to the new standard.
Summary
  1. Data of fixed investment and software investment in "4. Fixed Investment, etc." and"5. Fixed Investment of Financial Institutions" will be changed to the new standard.
  2. "Reference Table 1" and "Reference Table 2" will not be released.
  3. The time-series data of fiscal 2009 or later in "Development of Fixed Investment Including Land Purchasing Expenses" will be changed to the new standard.
Figures by Industry,
The Comprehensive Data Set
  1. Data after fiscal 2010 of the September 2010 survey will be changed to the new standard.
  2. "2. (5) Appendix: Fixed Investment etc. (Compiled under the New Lease Accounting Standard)" in The Comprehensive Data Set will not be released.
BOJ Time-Series Data Search
  1. Data of the previous standard until the June 2010 survey and data of the new standard after the September 2010 survey will be connected.
  2. The code of the connected data series will be as follows:
    109; Fixed Investment
    112; Software Investment
    162; Software and Fixed Investment Excluding Land Purchasing Expenses
  3. "Lease Assets," and "Purchasing Expenses of Equipments for Lease" etc. will no longer be provided.
  4. Names of the items will be changed (Appendix [PDF 37KB]).
  5. Data of the new standard from the March 2009 survey to the June 2010 survey will be available at "Flat Files Download"
