Revision to the Contents of "Payment and Settlement Statistics"

The Bank of Japan publishes the "Payment and Settlement Statistics" which shows the data on major Japanese payment and settlement systems, such as the volume and value of settlements.

From the release of "Payment and Settlement Statistics (April 2015)," scheduled on May 29, 2015, the Bank will apply following changes to accommodate structural changes in the payment and settlement systems and to better meet user needs.

  1. Introduction of new data related to electronic money
    Data related to electronic money will be newly added to enhance the statistics of the field of retail payments.
  2. Elimination of data for which other data sources are available
    Some data of the private clearing and settlement systems for securities and derivatives will no longer be published in the Bank's statistics under the circumstance in which major statistics are released by organizations in charge of those systems. Those data will continue to be available in the websites of those organizations. Links to these websites will be provided in the "Payment and Settlement Statistics."

Detail of Revision to the Contents

Introduction of New Data

Following data related to electronic money will be newly introduced.

  1. Volume of transaction, value of transaction, and value per transaction.
  2. Numbers of mobile electronic money instruments issued, and of which mobile phones.
  3. Number of terminals.
  4. Values outstanding.

Elimination of Data

The data of private clearing and settlement systems for securities and derivatives (excluding those related to settlements via BOJ current accounts) will no longer be published by the Bank owing to the statistics published by the organizations in charge of those systems. The eliminated data series are as follows.

  1. B-4. Tokyo Financial Exchange (TFX)
    "Daily Volume," "Number of Open Interest," and "Peak volume" of 3-month Euro-yen futures transactions, and "Largest Net Credit/Debit Position" of the "Net Positions Settled via BOJ Current Accounts."
  2. B-5. Japan Securities Clearing Corporation (JSCC)
    Table B-5-1. "Clearing of JGB Over-The-Counter Transactions"
    Table B-5-3. "DVP for Exchange-Traded Securities"
  3. B-6. JASDEC DVP Clearing Corporation (JDCC)
    Table B-6-1. "DVP for Non-Exchange-Traded Securities"
  4. B-7. Japan Securities Depository Center
    "Daily Volume" and "Daily Value" excluding the data of "DVP Settlement via BOJ Current Accounts" in the following tables.
    • Table B-7-1. "CP Settlement"
    • Table B-7-2. "Settlement of Corporate Bonds"
    • Table B-7-3. "Settlement of Investment Trust"
    • Table B-7-4. "Settlement of Stocks"

After the revision of the contents, the data of respective organizations related to "Settlement via BOJ Current Accounts" will continue to be published in the new statistics. To obtain the data that will no longer be published in the Bank's statistics, please refer to those organizations' websites whose links will be provided in the "Payment and Settlement Statistics."

Changing Definition

The definition of "Values of settlement via BOJ current accounts" of central counterparties will be integrated to "The aggregate value of credits and debits." The value of the following data will therefore be doubled since those data are calculated on the basis of the payment to the central counterparties.
